Excavator Attachment Guide – Hoses & Headbrackets

Getting the right information.

Key Measurements

Most modern excavators now have a hydraulic hitch to make changing the buckets & attachments much easier. Some smaller excavators these days will still have a manual hitch but the concept will be the same. When you order an excavator attachment there will be 3 main measurements that will need to be provided to ensure the correct head bracket is supplied.

The key measurements are:
-Pin Diameter
-Pin Centre to Centre
-Distance between the ears

These 3 key measurements are essential to ensure that your excavator hitch will accept the head bracket on the attachment.

Hydraulic Hoses

Other than mechanical attachments such as buckets & rippers, most excavator attachments will require the hydraulic power of the excavator. As a result we will need to connect the excavator attachment with the excavator through a series of hydraulic fittings.

Most attachments will only required 2 fittings a pressure & return line. Some attachments will require a case drain.

The 3 most common types of hydraulic fittings are:
-Flat Face Quick Couplers
-BSP (British Standard Pipe)
-JIC (Joint Industry Council)

We will also make notable mention to the ball bearing quick coupler which is more common in agriculture.

The Flat Face Quick couplers are the most common size. When discussing size we usually refer to the male end which inserts into the larger female coupling.

Larger fittings usually go onto larger machines for example smaller machines such in the 1.7-5T Range usually are equipped with 1/2 Inch or 25mm fittings.
